Use What You've Got {Found Objects}

Sometimes creativity is sitting right next to you and you don't even realize it. Found objects have long been a favorite in the scrapbooking world, and in our opinion, they still are! Can you think of anything more cost effective than using what you've already got on hand to create layouts? 

We challenged three of our designers to incorporate found objects into their layouts, and they delivered...with gusto! First, take a look at the way Stacey Michaud worked office supplies onto this page:

Stacey says: "I'm a big fan of using office supplies like paper clips and staples. This challenge really made me look at my household junk with a new eye. I found that metal bracket and thought it would look cool with ribbon! The large numerals are from a set of mailbox number stickers. I was cleaning out my kids' drawers and found that cute little tag that totally went with my theme!" 

Stacey arranged each of these fun little items onto her layout for the perfect "POP" of something special! You'd never known those pieces came from the junk drawer!

Designer Jaime Warren got a little bit artsy on this layout, using the bubble wrap on the inside of a mailing envelope as a stamp. 

Jaime says: "I used it to stamp on my layout with some Shimmerz paints. I just painted it on using a paper towel and then gently pressed the wrap on the background paper. 

Here, you can see how easy it is to use bubble wrap to add texture to your layout! First, dab on the paint:

Then stamp as much (or as little) as you want! Easy as pie! 

And, if you're a parent, you probably have kid art and love notes floating all over the house. Gather them up and tuck them into one of our mini bags like Diana Brodeur did on this layout: 

Notes like this, in their tiny little-kid handwriting become priceless keepsakes the older they get. While you may not be able to keep every note they write, you can choose the most precious and get them scrapped.

How To Get that Classic Webster's Style

Oh, that classic Webster's Style. Elegant. Timeless. Beautiful. 

But HOW do you achieve that on your layouts? Thankfully, we have Designer Iris Babao Uy to share tips on that very topic...Step-by-Step, she'll share how to capture the Webster's style using this gorgeous layout as her example: 

Take it away, Iris! 

Webster’s Pages papers are filled with beautiful patterns. To be able to layer patterns and embellishments without overpowering the photos, I like to start with a white cardstock. What I did here was to first mist the paper with yellow and green tones. Once dry, I then laid down a brick stencil and applied a mixture of gesso and glass bead gels over it. Lift immediately and let dry.

After the mixture dried, I then rubbed embossing ink over the brick pattern and brushed gold and bronze pigment powders to add color and shine.

In between waiting for mists and mediums to dry, I took out a few patterned papers and hand cut flowers and other elements that I can use to build my design.

As you can see here, I added a few more tones of blue inks and then proceeded to layer over embellishments and cut out patterns.

Use a foam tape to adhere paper cut outs. This adds great dimension to your page.

Finally, add the resin heart and some trims, the perfect finishing touches to pull it all together!

How Do I...{Fussy Cut my Webster's Pages?} with Emeline Seet

We sometimes hear that it's difficult to cut into a sheet of pretty patterned paper. After all, you don't want to ruin anything...

But we also know that paper isn't doing you any good if you hoard it! Time to break out those pointy scissors and try your hand at fussy cutting. 

If you don't know where to start, have no fear!

We have the fabulous Emeline Seet on hand to give us a step-by-step in how she incorporates our motifs into her work. 

And her work is truly stunning, isn't it? 

Emeline says, "Fussy cuts can be therapeutic but beware, it might get you fingers cramps too!" 

 Read on for Emeline's wonderful tips on incorporating fussy cutting into your next papercrafting project!

 

Did you know that the term "fussy cut" is also used in quilting? It simply means to target and cut out a specific motif on a pattern paper. 

Intricate cutting may not be everyone's cup of tea but who knows?! Maybe you'll be inspired to cut a motif on a pattern paper in future.

 

I'll share some of my routines I normally albeit by each time I attempt to do some detail work with the scissors.

 

Step 1: Use precision scissors. Those with pointed edge works best.

Step 2: Select your motif. Cut it out from the main pattern paper. 

A smaller surface is easier to cut around.

Step 3: Maneuver your scissors. 

If you are a right-hander, hold the scissors with your right hand, motif on your left hand. Turn the motif as you cut and pivot your right hand. (ie: Your left handing which is holding the motif should be moving around the scissors. Not the scissors cutting/moving around the motif). 

It might seem very intimidating initially, but follow these simple steps and we'll work a way to cut this fun piece out! 

I'll use the example of the carousel. Most of the time, I do not use my pen knife to cut out every nook and cranny. I prefer to use my scissors. Cut out the flag and cut around the flag (you may wish to make use of a tweezer to help to have a better grip if the motif is really small and you are determined to cut it).

Cut through the top of the carousel and slowly cut out rectangular grids from the carousel. It is easier to cut straight cuts than curves. Embrace imperfection.

Step 4: Use pop up foam adhesives.

To create dimension, I adhere a primary motif (using foam dots) and leverage on it to build my cluster of embellishments. I particularly like to have a couple of motifs stand out. Reason being, I can tuck and overlap other cut out patterns. 

Step 5: Cheat. 

Nobody is going to judge if you cut the motif "wrong". Even if you do, no sweat. Cover it up with a sticker gem or simply tuck under a focal motif mentioned in step 4.

So, here are some steps I routinely take when I am inspired to do some intricate cutting.

One more tip, try to use a solid colored background as your base. Let the intricacy of your cut-outs stand in contrast against the plain background. I promise it'll pop!

How Do I...? {get the layered look without the clutter?}

Today on our blog, we're continuing with a feature we started last month. You ask a question that starts with "How do I...?" and one of our cracker-jack designers answers it.

This month's question is...

"How do I get that layered look without it looking like I threw everything in my scraproom onto the page?"

And thankfully, Iris Babao-Uy is here with the answer (and some inspiration)...

Hi everyone! This is Iris and I am very happy to be answering this question we received on our blog. 

One thing I always do whenever I sit down to make a page is to take out my papers and start cutting out elements. It doesn't have to be intricate and exact cuts. It’s all about finding elements in your papers that you can turn into embellishments.

Next, I always start with a clean background. I love working with a white base because you can create your own color and add texture to your background at the same time. Working with a busy background will almost always throw your design off. Because you will be layering, you must make sure that your base is bright and clean so that you can effectively layer elements without making your design look too busy. 

Next, You can use stencils for misting or coloring, or you can even go further and add texture with different mediums. For this page, I used glass bead gels over a brick stencil and colored it with pastel chalks.  

Layering ribbons and trims over hand cut flowers and stems is also a great way to add layers and detail to your pages. 

Another fun thing to do is to grab elements of different mediums like fabric, resin, paper and layer them one on top of the other to add visual interest.

One important thing to remember when doing layered designs is BALANCE. Make sure that the visual weight is evenly distributed.  Think of your visual triangle. Select three points in your page where you want to make clusters and layers and concentrate on those. Also, it's wise to have a good amount of negative space or white space in your layout. This will balance the areas that are busy with layers with areas that are free of design. Allow some space for the eyes to rest and you will see that your design will become more appealing.

I hope these few tips will help you get started designing your own layered creations!
